Precision Aerospace Fasteners

Strict standards for aerospace fastener inspections

The design, manufacturing and inspection of aerospace fasteners is governed by strict standards. An aircraft can contain over a million fasteners, and just one failure could result in catastrophic consequences. Unlike precision screws, where threads are cut that can weaken the material, fasteners are produced by thread rolling on specialised high-grade materials such as titanium, steel alloys and super alloys.

There are many stages of inspection of fasteners, these include Non-Destructive Testing techniques (NDT) to identify flaws including Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Eddy Current Testing (ECT). There is also batch destructive testing methods such as Tensile Testing from the Starrett range of force testing systems.

Defect detection in precision fasteners

Dimensional and defect identification is also critical, and due to the high volume of aerospace fasteners that are manufactured, precision measurements need to be automated with batches being segregated for detailed inspection.

Optimax offer a range of measurement products for both automated in process fastener inspection and detailed fastener inspection. For rapid in line defect inspection, that could be considered as a Triage Analogy, we recommend the Kitov AI Automated AI system or the Inspekto S70 AI-guided visual inspection system.

For detailed thread or profile form we recommend the Starrett HDV300/400 shadowgraph or the Bruker Alicona µCMM 5 axis optical CMM that provides full 3D non-contact inspection.

Optivu Synergy Shadowgraph Software with Starrett HE400

We recommend the Starrett HE400 bench-top profile projector integrated with Optivu Synergy software. The Synergy software ensures accurate measurement data recording and has automated the calculation of geometric tolerances. Asked why they decided to buy the Starrett HE400 from Optimax, their reply was unequivocal: ‘They had, in my opinion, the most advanced profile projector on the market.’

The Optimax team with their extensive knowledge and expertise, have proven themselves to be the ideal partner for independent, candid advice. They are a company we can trust to support our metrology and visual inspection needs whether we are purchasing equipment or developing specific metrology instruments for our applications. Their experience and methodical attention to detail mean the outcomes we achieve support our testing requirements.

Dr Andrew Johnson, Assistant Director, RandA

Optimax are a trusted partner! We have been working in partnership with Optimax for several years, to supply us with inspection solutions, service, and onsite calibration to UKAS standards. Their knowledge and expertise is exceptional, they provide honest, independent advice. Optimax are quick to provide options and solutions for our inspection requirements. They work hard to deliver a solution that 100% fits the application rather than just supplying a product. Optimax work with us to ensure we achieve our inspection objectives – they are one of the first companies I turn to.

Bruce Daggett, Senior Aerospace Weston, Inspection Team Leader

For over 14 years Optimax has been providing us with inspection equipment, service and most importantly expertise. We need suppliers that can go the extra mile in looking specifically at our application and then providing a suitable and sometimes bespoke solution, and this is where Optimax have really made a difference

John Harris, Director, Nevo Developments

Optimax have an extensive product range that was very attractive to us. They took the time to understand my requirements and align a solution that fitted into my manufacturing processes. They were very knowledgeable and friendly, I found the virtual demonstration extremely helpful. The outcome of the project has been very successful and performs above expectations. I would definitely recommend Optimax.
