Internal Inspection of Castings

Internal inspection of metal castings

Fresh metal castings often have internal passages, holes, and chambers that can contain a variety of defects that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. The inspect these areas, quality control personnel require a Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) device. Defects found within metal castings may include:

  • Porosity and voids caused by trapped gas or shrinkage in the cooling process,
  • Cracks that may have formed due to thermal stress,
  • Trapped non-metallic foreign material,
  • Burrs and flash that may affect the parts function and fit
  • Surface finish defects that may affect function, e.g. fluid or airflow

The metal casting may require post machining or post repair verification as well as a thorough inspection before a costly pour ensuring they are free of debris.

Using Hawkeye borescopes for internal casting inspections

Using Hawkeye borescopes for internal casting inspections

The Hawkeye borescopes provide the best choice of products, for a specific application depending on the casting’s geometry.

Rigid Borescopes: The Pro Hardy is ideal for straight line inspection paths offering superior image clarity and are very durable; suitable for factory use.

Flexible Borescopes: The Pro-Flexible is a flexible borescope available in different diameters with 4-way articulation; durable with very bright illumination.

Video Borescopes: The Q2 Video Borescope is one of the most advanced systems and feature miniature camera(s) at the tip transmitting live video to a screen with the ability to capture and store images.

Borescopes are part of the range of non-destructive testing (NDT) products that allow internal inspection of castings without damage or disassembly and provide a fast and direct way to visually inspect a metal casting.

Don’t let hidden defects compromise your quality. Contact us today for a consultation and a live demonstration to see how our Hawkeye non-destructive inspection tools can secure the integrity of your castings.

Hawkeye Pro Hardy Borescope

The Hawkeye Pro Hardy Borescope offers excellent clarity when it comes to inspecting large dark spaces. One of the wider rigid borescopes available from Hawkeye, the Pro Hardy offers 3x the illumination of the Pro Slim Borescope and features an independent focusing ring for excellent video inspection.

Dr Andrew Johnson, Assistant Director, RandA

Optimax are a trusted partner! We have been working in partnership with Optimax for several years, to supply us with inspection solutions, service, and onsite calibration to UKAS standards. Their knowledge and expertise is exceptional, they provide honest, independent advice. Optimax are quick to provide options and solutions for our inspection requirements. They work hard to deliver a solution that 100% fits the application rather than just supplying a product. Optimax work with us to ensure we achieve our inspection objectives – they are one of the first companies I turn to.

Bruce Daggett, Senior Aerospace Weston, Inspection Team Leader

For over 14 years Optimax has been providing us with inspection equipment, service and most importantly expertise. We need suppliers that can go the extra mile in looking specifically at our application and then providing a suitable and sometimes bespoke solution, and this is where Optimax have really made a difference

John Harris, Director, Nevo Developments

Optimax have an extensive product range that was very attractive to us. They took the time to understand my requirements and align a solution that fitted into my manufacturing processes. They were very knowledgeable and friendly, I found the virtual demonstration extremely helpful. The outcome of the project has been very successful and performs above expectations. I would definitely recommend Optimax.
