A quality upgrade from analogue profile projectors

Sheldon Precision is a subcontract manufacturer of precision-turned parts with customers through the UK. Due to their multi-axis capabilities, they can use the latest CNC lathes to deliver complex components with features such as cross-drilling, tapping, and milling, all in a single operation. They supply components to the automotive, defence, and oil and gas industries with a robust ISO 9001 quality system.

Sheldon Precision was using analogue profile projectors for the first article inspection (confirming that the first item of the line is within specification) and in-process inspection. However, they found that there were geometric features they could not measure, positioning larger parts was difficult, and manually recording readings was prone to error. Their method with manual overlays on a profile projector was no longer accurate enough.

Measure difficult geometries with Starrett profile projectors

Measure difficult geometries with Starrett profile projectors

The customer approached Optimax with a common problem: their measurement tools were subjective with potential for human error, making it difficult to get reliable geometric measurements. They needed a solution that provides consistent, accurate results every time.

Optimax delivered a powerful solution: the Starrett HE400 bench-top profile projector paired with our Optivu Synergy software. This combination transformed their quality control process. The same shop floor staff now confidently measure tricky geometric features that were previously a challenge.

The system’s dual lenses allow for easy switching between magnifications, making it simple to inspect both small and large components. Plus, the integrated ring light for surface illumination means the HE400 is so versatile, it’s even replaced a separate vertical inspection machine.

The result? The customer now has a reliable, objective way to measure their parts, saving time and eliminating the guesswork.

Optivu Synergy Shadowgraph Software with Starrett HE400

We recommend the Starrett HE400 bench-top profile projector integrated with Optivu Synergy software. The Synergy software ensures accurate measurement data recording and has automated the calculation of geometric tolerances. Asked why they decided to buy the Starrett HE400 from Optimax, their reply was unequivocal: ‘They had, in my opinion, the most advanced profile projector on the market.’

Dr Andrew Johnson, Assistant Director, RandA

Optimax are a trusted partner! We have been working in partnership with Optimax for several years, to supply us with inspection solutions, service, and onsite calibration to UKAS standards. Their knowledge and expertise is exceptional, they provide honest, independent advice. Optimax are quick to provide options and solutions for our inspection requirements. They work hard to deliver a solution that 100% fits the application rather than just supplying a product. Optimax work with us to ensure we achieve our inspection objectives – they are one of the first companies I turn to.

Bruce Daggett, Senior Aerospace Weston, Inspection Team Leader

For over 14 years Optimax has been providing us with inspection equipment, service and most importantly expertise. We need suppliers that can go the extra mile in looking specifically at our application and then providing a suitable and sometimes bespoke solution, and this is where Optimax have really made a difference

John Harris, Director, Nevo Developments

Optimax have an extensive product range that was very attractive to us. They took the time to understand my requirements and align a solution that fitted into my manufacturing processes. They were very knowledgeable and friendly, I found the virtual demonstration extremely helpful. The outcome of the project has been very successful and performs above expectations. I would definitely recommend Optimax.
