Internal inspection of metal castings
Fresh metal castings often have internal passages, holes, and chambers that can contain a variety of defects that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. The inspect these areas, quality control personnel require a Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) device. Defects found within metal castings may include:
- Porosity and voids caused by trapped gas or shrinkage in the cooling process,
- Cracks that may have formed due to thermal stress,
- Trapped non-metallic foreign material,
- Burrs and flash that may affect the parts function and fit
- Surface finish defects that may affect function, e.g. fluid or airflow
The metal casting may require post machining or post repair verification as well as a thorough inspection before a costly pour ensuring they are free of debris.
