The engine and powertrain comprise the heart of a vehicle, producing the energy needed to make it operate and transferring that energy to the wheels. And these days, variations are huge. The engine can be petrol or diesel, with or without turbo- or supercharging, or electric. The transmission could be a single gear drive for an electric vehicle, or manual or automatic transmission for internal combustion engines and the final drive delivers power to 2 wheels to all wheels, through suspension and steering articulation. And in plant and other specialist vehicles, hydraulic drives may be used.
